“The Vintage Derrick”
One of the most iconic images of oil exploration is that of the classic oil derrick. This design was meant to be a statement piece that would guarantee that the owner would be likely to display it prominently. By combining the pen with a presentation holder, there is no doubt that this would be a true conversation starter in any office.
Inspired by the derricks of the early oil boom, the pen itself is a rather simple element of this sculpture.
In this design the pen itself is rather simple being composed of a portion of the “pipe” running in the center of the derrick. The central pipe and the pen are made from powder coated aluminum. When opened slightly the drawer serves as a holder for the pen.
A drawer in the base of the sculpture serves to hold five disposable ink cartridges for the pen. Also included is a place for a USB thumb drive on which company marketing materials could be included. The handle is an abstraction of the company’s logo.
As a small detail, the cap of the sculpture is engraved with the location of the company and its founding date.
